Pop-Tarts: Microwave-Friendly!

Did you know that you can microwave a pop tart? If you don't have a toaster handy, you can heat it up for "3 seconds" in the microwave instead.

3 seconds? That's one powerful microwave.

My Lunch is Mocking Me.

On the back of my Lean Cuisine microwavable lunch, right there next to the cooking instructions, it said, "Eating your meal on a plate and eating more slowly will lead to a better and more satisfying eating experience."

No duh retard Lean Cuisine marketing people! If I had the *time* to eat lunch on a plate, I wouldn't be eating your crap!

I'm pretty angry. But I'm also pretty hungry. Damnit.

Weekend Mode

How lonely my blog is -- no pretty pictures from the weekend.

I shall search the web to find alternative representations of what my weekend was like.

On Saturday we biked down to Venice Beach again (getting boring) to eat brunch at Rose Cafe. This was my first time there -- it's a very cute place. I had the 'Eggs Scandia' which was basically an Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon on croissant. Sounded so yummy but wasn't that tasty. The croissant was a little hard, the salmon sparse and the sauce over-bearing.

But the place was really cute!

After hanging out and lazying about at home, I had the sudden craving for fried foods again, so we did the LA dinner thing... you know, drive around aimlessly until you find a parking spot, then eat at the closest restaurant. After driving through Westwood, Westwood Blvd, Pico Blvd, we finally ended up on Sawtelle, in front of Furaibo! What luck!

I challenged myself and did NOT order the Hampen Cheese this time, although it is my favorite dish in the entire wide world. Instead, we went with chicken wings, calamari, tori soboro and some enoki scallops. Yum yum.

That night I decided to start Twilight, Book 1 of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyers. I got through a couple of chapters and went to bed. I didn't really start getting into it until Sunday, when I didn't leave the couch at all except for the occasional walk-through the kitchen yearning for snacks I did not have. I was such a teenybopper, taking breaks in between chapters to google production photos and videos of the moving coming out in December. It made the book all that more visual now that I was able to put faces to the characters -- since the author only describes them as the most beautiful creatures in the world, with wildly colored hair.

That said, not a very beautiful cast.

On Sunday I also stopped by Century City to do a bit of birthday shopping. Steve's birthday is on July 3rd and he has a twin, so it was double duty. I also started scoping out possible presents for Vina who is turning 21.

After shopping, I felt like eating fried foods again, this time fried macaroni balls from Cheesecake Factory. I just had these last week but they were so good I had to have some again. Immediately. Prepare yourselves, this is a big picture...

So yummy and crispy and cheesy and bready and heavenly. Nibbled on some spinach and cheese dip, fire-roasted artichoke, buffalo wings and a lot of bread before coming home with a stomachache. It was worth it though.

So I went back home to continue reading Twilight and finished around 10PM. I wasn't sure at that point if I should move on to the next book (would have been an all-nighter for sure) or be good and go to sleep early, since I had an early meeting today. I ended up finding some Rasberry Chocolate Mousse from Amandine's in the fridge and ate that, then prepared for bed.

Ai, I hope that this post is enough to get you to visit out here this summer! :)

This week is a short week... we have 7/3-7/4 off. And if we're lucky, they might declare 7/2 a half-day at the last minute. I'm already on weekend mode and can't focus at work. I wish I had my digital camera with me to at least upload some pictures or something. By the way, why is no one using the shutterfly site?

I got so busy this week, I never had a chance to finish my weekend recap. Even though I had only a 4-day work week!

So... I had a very eco-friendly weekend. Not so wallet-friendly though.

On Friday night we went to Denny's for dinner. I was craving some breakfast and IHOP was closed so we ended up at Denny's. Let this be on record that the Denny's on Lincoln Ave is the worst Denny's I've been to. The sausage was so dry and the waffles were not good at all.

On Saturday we cycled down to Father's Office on Montana Ave which boasts the best burgers in LA. Walking in, we were a little disappointed about the setup. Father's Office is a full bar, so it is only open for lunch on the weekends and even though it's 12 noon, they have a bouncer outside clicking away. Once you get in, you order at the bar and then pick a seat -- just like any other bar. This would have been fine by me except that the burgers are $12, fries are $6.50 and sodas are $3. So for a $40 meal, I typically like to expect at least a guaranteed seat.

But, that disappointed was short-lived. As soon as our sweet potato fries came out (a-la-cart), I knew we were in for a treat.

The fries were fried perfectly crispy (which can be difficult with sweet potatoes) and had a hint of garlic and spices on them. We were given some sort of spicy aioli to dip, as the bar doesn't serve ketchup.

But of course, the meat was the main attraction. I don't usually like eating meat that looks like it was alive 5 minutes ago, but this burger was so ridiculously good. The caramelized onions and spots of melted gruyere were tremendously tasty alongside the fresh, hearty ground beef. There were also bits of blue cheese which I don't typically like, but made this burger heavenly. The bun was smaller than the meat and the arugula was a refreshing alternative to lettuce.

So after a heavy lunch, we jumped back on our bikes and headed south to Cynergy, which is the store we bought our bicycles at. We were due for our 30-day tuneup, which is kind of like a first oil change for a car. It was about an hour wait while our bicycles were cleaned up, spokes were tightened and cables were evened out, then we were back on our way.

So crazy that bicycles are like a car! Anyways, this marked the first day I ever really crossed Santa Monica Blvd, and we actually took that street all the way back home. (On the sidewalk, of course. Those big blue buses scare the sh*t out of me.)

Later that night I stopped by REI to get a bicycle computer. It's not as fancy as it sounds, it's just a $20 speedometer.

I needed something to clock how fast I was going because I had no idea, and when you're on the street riding next to cars, it's kind of nice to know. Also, it keeps an odometer so I know how far I've gone for that trip or for the total life of the bicycle. Cool stuff. After REI I had another huge beef craving (what did I start?) and had an Arby's sandwich for dinner.

Luckily on Sunday morning, I didn't have another beef craving, otherwise I might've eaten a T-bone steak and eggs. Instead, we cycled down to Bagel Nosh in Santa Monica, which is the best place to get a $5 breakfast anywhere in West LA.

So for $5 you get a freshly baked bagel (so fresh it's still chewy in the middle), two eggs any style, your choice of meat and hash browns. Not bad! They also have great fresh orange juice.

After filling up on carbs and protein and animal fat, we headed west towards 3rd Street Promenade to do some browsing. After aimlessly walking around for an hour, we headed back on Montana Ave. As usual, I hit that stretchy area that goes uphill and begged to stop. This time, I used Pinkberry as an excuse. I don't know if they were just having an awesome yogurt day or what but that was the best Pinkberry I've ever had. The green tea version was just the right mix of sweet and tart.

So anyways, big milestone here, on the way back home we took San Vincente Blvd for the first time which has a huge bike lane and I clocked 19 mph! That's the fastest speed I've ever gone! I typically ride slowly like 9-10mph on the sidewalk or 11-12mph on the street but on that ride home I was going f-a-s-t. It must have been the Pinkberry.

On Sunday night, we watched The Incredible Hulk at Century City. I wanted to wait for the weekend rush to be over and since I had Monday off, we saw a late showing. It was a pretty good movie -- I didn't like it as much as I liked Iron Man, but I do like Edward Norton and Liv Tyler so it was entertaining. I felt this movie was so narrow and focused, not as social or comical as Iron Man was. It's definitely worth watching in the theater but I'm not going to bother getting the DVD or watching it again if it was on TV.

On Monday I took the first of my 3 flex days to go to the spa with Marcela. She treated me to a nice 5-step body treatment at Ole Henriksen Spa, it was awesome! It was a small, intimate Spa in Sunset Plaza on the Sunset Strip.

We arrived a little late so we were rushed to the locker rooms and went directly into our treatment rooms. The 5-step treatment started with a relaxing hand and foot reflexology massage. It's amazing what muscles you neglect and don't know you are abusing until you get a massage. They hit a good amount of my typing and walking-in-heels muscles. :)

After that, as you lay on the towel-covered bed, they turn on this rain shower coming from above that hits your entire body horizontally. It's a very calming effect although I would not recommend it to anyone that is claustrophobic! So as the rain rinses your body, you get kind of a slowly mellow out and start to feel like you are at a tropical waterfall.

The next step was the body scrub. Let's just say I think I've been doing my body scrubs completely wrong all this time. First of all the therapist uses a whole LOT of salt scrub, and this particular blend had peppermint oil in it so it was invigorating. I realized this really helps a lot of the friction to exfoliate the skin, especially in the harder to reach areas. The scrub was great and really made me feel like I emerged with new skin. I have to say that I was surprised to see that the tops of my thighs and the inside of my arms were the most sensitive parts of my body to the scrub. After this step, I got rinsed again with the tropical rain bath.

So the next step was the heated seaweed wrap. After applying a thick layer (and I'm talking a baking-mixing bowl's worth) to your body, I was wrapped in mylar to keep the heat in. While I was toasting in this custom-made concoction, the therapist folded some lavender nourishing cream into my hair and gave me a cranial massage. This was probably the most relaxing point of the entire treatment, I was glad it was last!

So after about 1 hour and 15 minutes of pampering, they turned on the tropical rain bath again and left the room so I could do a full shower with Ole Henriksen products and clean myself up. It was such an awesome treat!

After the spa treatment and getting ready, we had a girls' lunch out on the patio of Le Petit Four -- I haven't had their Salmon tartar in so long. We sat outside next to an obnoxious group of girls that were gagging over our artichoke so it got a little annoying.

After my relaxing morning at the spa, Steve and I went cycling. This time we took San Vincente Blvd west all the way to the beach. It was a really good ride and we didn't want to turn around and go back home so we ended up walking around on 3rd street again. I think I'm really getting sick of going to 3rd street but we haven't really found any other places to bike to yet.

We walked around and window shopped until the late afternoon and it started getting cold. I wore a tank top and some workout shorts so I could tan while we were out there -- but now it was apparent that was not the best idea. =/ I went into Adidas looking for a light running jacket that might've been on sale that I could wear on my way home but the only one I wanted was a Stella McCartney one which was not cheap enough for an impulse buy.

So then I thought, why not go to Performance Bike and REI and maybe they have one specific to biking -- at least that way there will be reflectors and that will make it safer for me to cycle at night. Well, most cycling clothes are neon. :( I *did* find this turquoise jacket in the clearance section of REI that was kind of "just okay"... wasn't cute or anything but it served the purpose and had reflectors and zippers on the pockets so iPhones and such don't fly out of my pocket while I'm riding. I went to the cashier and it turned out to be only $13! Score! :) I was pretty happy on my ride back home, even though it was uphill.

And that was my long weekend! All cycling (except for the spa, which doesn't count cos we carpolled) and no gas wasted!

One of my co-workers...

...hums while she pees.

I dread the bathroom.

I hate having to share a 3-stall bathroom with the girls of my office. Don't get me wrong, they keep it very clean and there are hardly any "problems". However, I just can't stand having to hear other people while they're urinating or other things.

It's perfectly fine in a public bathroom at the mall or Target. It's actually perfectly fine at work as long as I don't have to see who comes in or out of the stalls next to me. It's those rare cases where I see a person come in and THEN have to suffer by listening to them tinkle (or worse)... that really weirds me out. I don't want to associate any bodily sounds with the people I work with.

I don't want to know who farts as they pee or who pees super loudly. :(

Clumsy!

I was giving a "Lunch & Learn" presentation with a few people today, which is usually an agency-wide learning session where we provide lunch. I was the "driver" of the powerpoint slides, meaning I sat in the front and pushed "next" whenever the speaker was ready for the next slide.

About 3 slides in, I spilled my cup of water all over the keyboard.

*So embarrassing*

Good thing the keyboard didn't short out and shut down the computer, but I spent the rest of the hour-long presentation dabbing the keyboard slowly with a napkin to soak up the water while trying to avoid hitting a key.

Doggie Charm School

So I've been watching a lot of Dog Whisperer now that I have NatGeo... and I think it's time for Tofu and Lulu to start school. I feel like Lulu's in danger of picking up Tofu's bad habits and their barking is only getting worse because they're instigating each other.

We're going to start with Tofu first... get her enrolled in a puppy kindergarten class at Doggie Manners. She might already be too old though. I'm thinking if the classes work for both of them, maybe I'll enroll them in the tricks & agility class too, that might be fun! (And get Lulu off her lazy a$$)

Lulu & Tofu's Weekday Recap

All they do is sleep all day.

Weekday Recap?

I just realized I don't post much during the week to talk about work... so I shall today since I'm procrastinating :).

Okay I'm drawing a blank mind.

Yesterday (Monday) was a typical Monday, full of status meetings to get everyone up-to-speed for all the going ons in the week. The main clients I work on nowadays are Toyota and DirecTV.

I had a total of 6 meetings, which his pretty light for a Monday. They included status meetings, kick-off meetings and work sessions. I have a total of about 10 projects right now, which is really little compared to when I was the lone interactive PM last year. However, the projects are a lot more complicated now with multiple landing pages and components so I've had to do a lot more upfront work before the projects go into creative development. And... all of that extra work has paid off because it looks like I'm on my way to transferring over to the strategy/digital department as an experience designer. During the transition though, I'll be playing both roles on my projects.

Yesterday for lunch I brought my Pad See Ew leftovers and microwaved them. Oh and they also refilled the candy drawers (which they do at the beginning of every month) so I had a Twix, mini Kit Kat and some Reese's. I also had a banana since Monday is fruit day. Although it used to be that we got all kinds of fruits on Monday and recently it's just been bananas. (No pun intended)

I got off work around 6:45pm yesterday and went home and cooked... lap cheong and eggs with kecap manis, my quintessential high school dinner! I remember when I first taught Aai how to cook it! :) After dinner I think I watched a bunch of TV then fell asleep. I must be experiencing a lot of stress lately because I've been clenching my jaw in my sleep again :(.

Oh, funny thing, I caught some wedding TV shows on the WE channel last night... Rich Bride Poor Bride and Platinum Weddings. Sheesh. Didn't realize there were so many wedding shows. They featured "bridezilla" type brides that were going crazy managing every small detail of "their day" and it made me really angry at bride-to-be's in general. They were acting so spoiled and self-centric. Whatever motivation SATC gave me to start wedding planning, these two wedding shows completely killed it.

This morning I woke up at around 8:30AM... which is late considering my work starts at 9AM. I quickly got ready and made a green onion pancake to eat in the car. I ran into some traffic on Bundy but the freeway was clear all the way. I made it to work just 2 minutes late to my first meeting -- not bad! It's a weekly Tuesday morning call with the Toyota clients to go over the projects for the week.

After the meeting I went to my desk to answer some e-mails and get some things going. I'm eating some of the pound cake I baked on Sunday right now to hold me over until lunchtime.

And that's pretty much it. A day in the life of me!

Weekend Recap: Settling Down

So I would say that this is the first weekend so far where we are all settled in. All of our stuff is moved in, unpacked and in its proper place (for the most part).

On Friday after work, I headed down to Roxbury to do a final walk-through of the old apartment with the manager.

It felt really weird being in there while it was empty. Even when I first moved in it was never really empty since I overlapped a couple of days with the previous tenant so there was stuff in there when I moved in my first set of boxes.

I'm going to miss walking down the alley to pee the dogs, and being right across the street from such a great park! I should have played tennis more while I was there. :(

So I slept in on Saturday morning -- woke up around 11am. All the dogs were being lazy too.

After we were all wide awake, we took a walk to the Barrington Dog Park. It's a good 15-20 minute walk but the way there is uphill so it took a lot of energy. Lulu had a huge workout chasing after birds. A lot of the people there watched her running after the birds and just laughed. After the dog park we gave the dogs a bath (Tofu gets stinky so fast) and then headed out to Monterey Park for my haircut appointment.

On the way there I had a craving for a Pastrami Sandwich at Chano's which is next to USC. There was a lot of construction around the school and one-way streets and detours set up everywhere. Took us about 45 minutes to finally find Chano's.

After our lunch/dinner I had my haircut by James at Visage salon. He did a pretty good job, always knows how to style my bangs. He did layer my hair a LOT because I had so much dry/dead hair he had to cut it all off. My hair is so thin now I have to figure out a good way to style it so that I don't look mushroom-headed.

After the haircut, we went to 99 Ranch to buy groceries. Since our new apartment has a real gas stove, I was excited to finally start cooking (and baking!) again.

On Sunday morning we went to the Farmer's Market for lunch. There were a lot of clothes vendors (this IS LA) and a lot of good Mexican food. I had a beef tamale, some corn and a "pupusa". I'd explain what that is but I'm not really sure.

Edit: Pupusa (from Pipil pupusawa) is a thick, hand-made corn tortilla (made using masa de maíz, a maize flour dough used in Latin American cuisine) that is stuffed with one or more of the following: cheese (queso) (usually a soft Salvadoran cheese called Quesillo), fried pork rind (chicharrón), squash (ayote), refried beans (frijoles refritos), or queso con loroco (loroco is a vine flower bud from Central America).

After stuffing ourselves silly and buying a bunch of fruit and other stuff, I also bought some flowers for the house. I'm going to try to fill this vase every weekend from the farmer's market, it brightens up the house so much! Although I'm starting to feel like we have *too* many plants...

Gerbera Daisies, Spider Mums and an unknown pink/white flower.

After the farmer's market, we ran a few errands and went to Bed Bath and Beyond, Nordstrom's and Ralph's. I bought the last minute things I needed to make dinner and dessert for tonight.

I found a recipe for Pad See Ew online and decided to try it out. I bought most of the ingredients at 99 Ranch already -- it turned out surprisingly well! It was a little dry, I could have used more oil. The chicken was really tender and the Chinese broccoli was really fresh so I actually thought that the taste was a lot better than some Thai restaurants! (Heehee)

I also baked a pound cake. I was actually aiming to make my cream cheese pound cake but wasn't paying attention and pulled the wrong recipe out and made a plain butter pound cake. It's more fluffy than pound cakes usually are (I left the mixer on too long) but overall tastes pretty good. Baking with a gas oven is so much better than my old electric oven! Everything cooks/bakes so evenly.

I even baked something for Tofu & Lulu -- two dozen Pineapple Luau cookies from the Three Dog Bakery Cookbook.
